David A. Grandy's book moves from the scientific to the existential, from Einstein to Merleau-Ponty, from light as a phenomenon to light as that which is constitutive of reality. To measure the speed of light is to measure something about the way we are measured or blended into the cosmos, and that universal blending predetermines our measurement of light speed in favour of a universal or constant value. It's quite a trip, one aimed at scientists who have pondered light speed constancy, philosophers inclined to question the idea that mind and world are distinct, and scientifically or philosophically inclined persons who enjoy stretching themselves in new ways.

Jul 24, Karl Nehring rated it really liked it Shelves: philosophy , science , religion. I probably would have given this book five stars had the last chapter not proven to be a bit, uh, nebulous, trying to bring Christian theology into the account. It seemed a bit awkward and forced. That aside, though, this really is a stimulating book.

What is said about light in a practical and philosophical sense adds so much to that discussion and brings it into focus. Very well done.

Light, massless, unobservable until it hits you, constant light speed as observed from any reference, has just begun to shape the meaning of everything and now is among the most basic of philosophical axioms.

It is among the greatest mysteries. Jun 12, Michael rated it it was amazing Shelves: philosophy , science , nonfiction , xshort-less , merleau-ponty-m , aaa-favorphilosophy , phil-phenomenology , philosophy-france , aa-francelit , aa-europelit.
